  • Berdych and Baghdatis advance in Rotterdam

    2/10/11 7:59 PM | Cheryl Murray
Berdych and Baghdatis advance in Rotterdam Tomas Berdych got through a tricky 3-set match against qualifier Dmitry Tursunov to make his way into Friday’s quarterfinals.

Tomas Berdych def. Dmitry Tursunov 6-4, 4-6, 7-5

This match was a high-quality affair. Tursunov has often been known for his spotty shot selection and a tendency towards unforced errors, but he held it together on Thursday. Had Berdych not served as well as he had, the outcome could have been different for the Russian. Unfortunately for Tursunov he ran into an in-form Berdych.

The world No. 7 lost just 5 points on his first serve for the match and 7 on his second. He had one blip in the middle set where Tursunov broke him at love; otherwise the Czech man was nearly flawless on serve.

The win sends Berdych into the quarterfinals, where he will take on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who battled past Michael Llodra on Wednesday.

Marcos Baghdatis def. Feliciano Lopez 7-6(3), 6-3

After upsetting Andy Murray 6-4, 6-1 on Wednesday, Marcos Baghdatis came out on court this afternoon and proved that the win over the world No. 5 was no fluke. The Cypriot never faced a single break point against Feliciano Lopez. The Spaniard isn’t particularly known for his fierce return game, but even still, Baghdatis was magnificent on serve.

Lopez won exactly 3 points off the Baghdatis first serve, only one of which came in the opening set. It was a credit to the Spaniard that he was able to hold to force the opening set tiebreaker, but Baghdatis was able to close out the set with a fairly comfortable 7-3 scoreline.

Lopez lost steam in the second set. The Spaniard only allowed one break of serve, but it was all Baghdatis needed to close out the match in straights. The Cypriot will battle Ivan Ljubicic in the quarters.
