  • Robredo once again has upper hand on Fognini

    2/9/11 5:49 AM | Ricky Dimon
Robredo once again has upper hand on Fognini Tommy Robredo beats Fabio Fognini for the second time in four days to advance to the Costa do Sauipe second round on Tuesday. This one ends in far less controversial fashion than their previous encounter.

This one was different in that the two competitors actually shook hands at the net when it was over. But the result was the same.

Tommy Robredo defeated Fabio Fognini 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-3 in the first round of the Brasil Open on Tuesday, three days after a contentious semifinal at the Movistar Open in Santiago, Chile. That one ended with Fognini firing expletive-riddled insults at his opponent and Robredo refusing to shake hands.

Aside from Robredo getting uncharacteristically fired up after hitting winners, this one had none of the same animosity between the two players. Similarly, though, the result was a competitive three-set win for Robredo.

The Spaniard started off strong, holding every one of his five service games in the first set. Robredo faced no break points, so one break easily allowed him to serve out the opening frame of play at 5-3.

Fognini started to find the range from the baseline in set two, but he still found himself trailing by a break at 4-5. With the match on his racket, Robredo failed to close it out and Fognini managed to force a tiebreaker. Having seized the momentum, the 54th-ranked Italian raced through the decider seven points to three.

Just as he did after losing the first set in Santiago, however, Robredo was quick to regain the upper hand. The sixth-seeded Spaniard broke immediately for a 2-0 lead in the third and never came close to giving it away. He lost a mere five points in five service games, including none during his second chance to serve for the match at 5-3. Robredo struck four consecutive emphatic winners to finish off the proceedings in style.

Next up for Robredo is Pablo Andujar, a straight-set winner over Daniel Gimeno-Traver on Monday.
