Marin Cilic knocked out No. 5 Jurgen Melzer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga pulled through in 3 over countryman Michael Llodra on Wednesday.
Marin Cilic def. Jurgen Melzer 6-2, 6-4
No. 5 seed Jurgen Melzer played abysmal tennis on Wednesday against Marin Cilic. The Croat hit just 2 aces all match and served at 52% and the Austrian was still unable to secure even a single service break from Cilic.
Melzer was 0 for 3 in saving break points against his serve, and while he struck three more aces than Cilic, he was completely ineffective on the return. His game was rife with errors and bad timing from the start to the finish of the match. Cilic did not even play particularly well, but still dropped just 6 games in the match.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga def. Michael Llodra 4-6, 6-4, 6-4
The match between Frenchmen Tsonga and Llodra was of a much higher quality than the Cilic match. Llodra played well at the net, enough so that he snagged the first set from his Davis Cup teammate. Llodra’s serve-and-volley style rattled Tsonga enough that he was able to snag the only break of serve in the opening set.
Tsonga finally found his range on his passing shot in the second set, a crucial piece to defeating a player like Llodra who spends so much time at the net. Tsonga wrapped up the match with a single service break in both the second and third sets. He will take on the winner of Dmitry Tursunov and Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals.
