Filippo Volandri takes out No. 8 seed Victor Hanescu on Monday in Costa do Sauipe. Volandri is joined in the second round by Pablo Andujar, who dismissed Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
Filippo Volandri converted four of five break points to roll past Victor Hanescu 7-5, 6-1 in the first round of the Brasil Open on Monday. Volandri needed just one hour and 28 minutes advance, and he awaits either Rui Machado or a qualifier.
Hanescu at least managed to be competitive throughout the opening frame of play as the two competitors exchanged one break of serve each en route to 5-5. That, however, is when the tide turned. Volandri held for 6-5 and then took control with his second break of the day.
From there it was all over for Hanescu, who disappeared in set two. The eighth-seeded Romanian won only six return points and he looked even worse on serve, winning barely more than 40 percent of the points even when he put his first delivery in play. Two breaks were more than enough for Volandri to serve out the proceedings at 5-1. The 88th-ranked earned his first win in 2011 while Hanescu did not fire a single ace as he fell to 1-3 on the season.
Pablo Andujar also reached the second round, crushing Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-3, 6-1 in one hour and 17 minutes. Andujar has now defeated Gimeno-Traver five straight times (the four previous at the Challenger level) while Gimeno-Traver drops to 0-4 for the year. Next up for the victorious Spaniard is either Tommy Robredo or Fabio Fognini.
