Australian Open semifinalist David Ferrer saw his Rotterdam bid cut short at the hands of Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen, meanwhile Dutch fans had something to cheer about in Thiemo De Bakker.
Jarkko Nieminen def. David Ferrer 6-3, 6-4
An uninspired performance from David Ferrer resulted in an early ouster from the Rotterdam tournament on Tuesday. Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen was solid enough to take advantage of a bevy of poor service games from Ferrer. The first set featured a pair of breaks for Nieminen and one for the Spaniard, but the real surprise was Ferrer’s collapse in the second set.
The Spaniard raced out to a 4-1 lead and looked poised to level the match at a set a piece when his service game completely fell apart. Nieminen went on to win the next 5 games to take the match in straight sets. The Finn will take on Viktor Troicki in the second round.
Thiemo De Bakker def. Philipp Petzschner 6-4, 0-6, 6-1
Thiemo De Bakker was scheduled to play Ernests Gulbis in the first round, but with Gulbis out with an illness, he took on lucky loser Philipp Petzschner instead. This was a bit of a crazy match, with momentum swinging wildly one way and then the other.
De Bakker actually did not serve well in the opening set; just 41% first serves in and 1 ace to speak of, but he was able to convert on his single break point chance to take the one set lead.
The craziness started in the second set. De Bakker began to make an unusual number of errors, even to the point of mis-hitting an easy overhead winner so that it bounced awkwardly off the top of the net and landed wide. The Dutchman, broken 3 times, did not win a single game in the set.
Petzschner took his turn at playing badly in the third. De Bakker rolled through the set without giving the German a whiff at the service break. De Bakker will take on the winner of Mikhail Youzhny and Marcel Granollers in the second round.
