Santiago champion Tommy Robredo will look to make it two titles in two weeks as he heads to Costa Do Sauipe. Nicolas Almagro, Albert Montanes, and Alexandr Dolgopolov should also contend for the title.
Two former champions will be looking for their second titles at the Brasil Open this week. Nicolas Almagro, who won in 2008, headlines the field as the No. 1 seed and Tommy Robredo, the 2009 winner, is seeded sixth.
Robredo is coming off his 10th career title, having prevailed at the Movistar Open in Santiago, Chile on Sunday. The veteran Spaniard came back from a break deficit in the third set of the final to defeat Santiago Giraldo.
Interestingly, Robredo is set for a rematch of his contentious semifinal showdown with Fabio Fognini. They hurled insults at each other and Robredo refused to shake hands after the match...and now they will see each other again in the Costa Do Sauipe first round.
Almagro has an opening-round bye along with Top 4 seeds Albert Montanes, Thomaz Bellucci, and Alexandr Dolgopolov.
Bellucci is Brazil's best hope for hometown champion. He could face either Juan Ignacio Chela or 2010 runner-up Lukasz Kubot in the quarters before a potential semifinal against Almagro. Dolgopolov is back in action for the first time since reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.
