Richard Krajicek’s Rotterdam tournament will be absent this year’s Australian Open champion, but Robin Soderling, Andy Murray, David Ferrer and Tomas Berdych will all be in action this week.
The draw at the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament looks to be evenly distributed, with Robin Soderling ruling the top half and Australian Open finalist Andy Murray taking the bottom.
Soderling’s half features seeds David Ferrer (3), Jurgen Melzer (5) and Mikhail Youzhny (6) and dangerous lurkers Ernests Gulbis, Viktor Troicki and Thiemo De Bakker.
The earliest dangers to Soderling will be a pair of Dutchmen. Wildcard Robin Haase, who Soderling is scheduled to meet in the opening round, hasn’t been particularly consistent over the past year, but he still has a deadly first serve and the lightning-fast courts in Rotterdam can only help the Dutchman.
Soderling should get past Haase, but waiting for him in the third round could be Thiemo De Bakker, who has the kind of game that could wreak havoc on Soderling on this surface.
Andy Murray, at the bottom of the draw, had the absolute worst luck possible; he drew tough Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis in the opening round and danger is never far from the Australian Open finalist. The other seeds in Murray’s half are Tomas Berdych (4), Ivan Ljubicic (7) and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (8), but the bigger dangers are the unseeded players.
Gilles Simon could be waiting for Murray in the quarterfinals and big servers Michael Llodra and Feliciano Lopez lurk as well as up-and-comer Grigor Dimitrov.

Unsurprising. Llodra is outstanding on those quick indoor courts.
