South African native Kevin Anderson took the SA Tennis Open crown on Sunday with a win over Somdev Devvarman.
Kevin Anderson needed three sets to down tough Indian Somdev Devvarman in front of the home crowd in Johannesburg. The title is Anderson’s first on the ATP tour; he previously made the finals of the now defunct event in Las Vegas back in 2008.
Anderson served particularly well in the title match. The South African smacked 11 aces and put 76% of his first serves in.
The opening set was the most competitive of the match. Anderson was broken early to go down 1-3, broke back and was then broken again to give Devvarman the one set advantage.
Anderson got back on firm footing in the second set with a break of serve at 2-3. He held onto his lead to level the match at a set a piece.
Devvarman ran out of steam in the third set. Anderson snagged 5 games in a row to take the final set 6-2.
