Tommy Robredo captured the Movistar Open championship crown on Sunday, having held on to defeat first-time finalist Santiago Giraldo in three sets. The Spanish veteran added ATP World Tour number 10 to his resume.
Sixth seed Tommy Robredo survived a second-set lull to secure the Movistar Open title Sunday evening, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(5). The 28-year-old added career title No. 10 to his collection, signaling his first championship victory since Buenos Aires in 2009.
Robredo led by a set and a break before careless serving cost him the second-set edge. Giraldo recovered to 1-1, as the Spaniard donated a double fault. The Colombian, who pushed his advantage to 4-1 with aggressive baseline play, closed the 6-2 set on another double fault from Robredo.
Giraldo looked to have the match in hand, as he took a 3-1 lead in the deciding set. The 23-year-old served for the title at 5-3, but committed a handful of errors to drop serve. A steadier Robredo pushed the set into a tie-break, where he led 3-2 on a backhand miss from Giraldo. After a mini-break exchange, the Spaniard pulled to 5-3. Two championship points came quickly for Robredo, who sealed the title as Giraldo netted a forehand.
Robredo completed the two-hour and 17-minute match with 71% of his first-service points won and four of 7 break chances converted.

Today Robredo already moved up in rankings: from 40th position to 31st. Giraldo moved 10 positions up, he is now 47th.
I finished watching the final when Giraldo was serving for the match. Robredo has made an error after error and I thought the match was over. I was surprised to read the result later.

Congrats to Robredo. Didn't get to watch the final. Poor Giraldo, has to learn from
this experience and controls his nerve. Good for Robredo, wow didn't know his last title was in 2009. His other Spanish compatriots were definitely doing better in 2010, winning 20 titles, with 8 of them winning titles. A good start for Robredo, hope he moves up the rankings this year.
