Ivan Dodig defeats Michael Berrer in the Zagreb final on Sunday afternoon. Berrer finishes runner-up for the second time in as many years.
Ivan Dodig won his first career ATP title on Sunday, and he did it front of a hometown crowd.
Dodig emerged victorious at the PBZ Zagreb Indoors by defeating two-time runner-up Michael Berrer 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 38 minutes. This is the third consecutive year in which the Croatian fans have seen one of their own take the title. Marin Cilic won it in both 2009 and 2010, defeating Berrer in last year's final.
Taking control right from the start with big serving, Dodig fired eight aces in the opening set and won 17 of 18 first-serve points. One break allowed the world No. 84 to serve out the set at 5-4.
Berrer raised his disappointing level slightly in the second, but he squandered all seven of his break-point opportunities. Dodig managed to consolidate his lone break in set two with clutch serving on big points, and he struck eight more aces to go along with a total of seven double-faults.
Dodig thought he converted his first match point at 5-4 and flung his racket into the stands to celebrate, but the chair umpired overruled an "in" call and Dodig ended up losing the point. The unseeded Croat, though, clinched the title two points later and again tossed his racked into the crowd. This time, he did not need it back.
"This is the best thing that can happen to a player," Dodig explained. "To play at home in front of your own crowd and win your first title.... I'm really happy and enjoying the moment. It's been amazing all week. It's an unbelievable experience."
