  • Dodig, Berrer advance to Zagreb final

    2/5/11 11:22 PM | Ricky Dimon
Dodig, Berrer advance to Zagreb final Ivan Dodig treats the Zagreb crowd to a three-set win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on Saturday. Dodig will meet Michael Berrer for the title.

    Ivan Dodig d. (3) Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4

Dodig came back from a set and a break deficit to stun Garcia-Lopez in the semifinals of the PBZ Zagreb Indoors after two hours and 52 minutes of play on Saturday. Playing in front of a home crowd, the 84th-ranked Croat got off to slow start and won only three of 11 second-serve points in the first set while getting broken twice. Garcia-Lopez served it out at 5-4 for an early lead.

The turning point came with Garcia-Lopez serving up 4-3 in the second. A pair of questionable line calls proved costly for the 29th-ranked Spaniard and he gave back the break before going down in a tiebreaker. Garcia-Lopez continued to fight in the third, but one break was enough for Dodig, who saved both of the break points he faced to consolidate the advantage. Dodig finished off the proceedings on serve at 5-4 to book a spot in his first career ATP final.

    (8) Michael Berrer d. (5) Florian Mayer 6-1, 6-4

Berrer will be competing in his second career ATP final and second consecutive Zagreb final after steamrolling past Mayer in just 59 minutes. The 66th-ranked German, who fell to Marin Cilic in last year's title match, came out firing and dropped only four points in his first four service games while breaking twice.

This week's No. 8 seed served out the opening frame of play at 5-1 and did not look back in the second. Mayer, who struggled from start to finish, did a better job on his own serve but continued to be hopeless in the return game. Berrer dropped a mere five points in his last five service games and closed out the match with ease at 5-4.
