  • Devvarman, Van der Merwe advance in Johannesburg

    2/5/11 2:13 PM | Cheryl Murray
Devvarman, Van der Merwe advance in Johannesburg The draw at the SA Tennis Open continues to be a golden opportunity for a relative unknown to nab a tour title.

Popular Indian player Somdev Devvarman is one step closer to his first ever tour title. The Indian defeated South African wildcard Rik de Voest in a hard-fought quarterfinal bout to earn his spot in the semis.

It was a nearly two and a half hour battle, with de Voest taking in the first set and Devvarman just holding onto the second in a tiebreaker to stay in the match. By the third set, de Voest was out of steam, however, and was broken four times to give the Indian the win.

Perhaps the most interesting story of the tournament so far is Izak Van Der Merwe’s spot in the semifinals. The South African wildcard is ranked 170 in the world, but saw his way past Germany’s Simon Greul in the quarters. Greul is ranked 130 in the world.

Van Der Merwe sent 11 aces past Greul in the straight set victory. The South African was broken just once, while breaking Greul 3 times.

The win sets up a semifinal showdown for Van Der Merwe withDevvarman.

second ATP final for Somdev.

RickyDimon , 2/5/11 6:46 PM

Yes, it's Somdev's second ATP final after Chennai Open 2009.
So, it's high time that he should win a ATP tournament right now.
Best of luck Somdev, it's now or never for you!

I have been waiting for this day for so long........ I hope he wins this !!!!!!!!

He's got himself a pretty tall order, deepz - literally and figuratively, given that Kevin Anderson stands over six feet six tall and has also recorded a straight-sets win over Somdev on this type of surface, in their only meeting at USO last September. His world ranking is higher, too.

Kevin's been in excellent form throughout the week and has dropped only one set on a tie-break, winning all others without being taken to advantage. No doubt he will be keen to give the home fans the title to cheer.

But the reigning Commonwealth Games singles titlist can count on good memories of wins against Kevin at NCAA level a few years back.

I am hoping for a good match today, no matter what.

they must have played a zillion times in college

Well, it was not to be. Kevin Anderson came back from a set down for the second time in as many days to break Indian hearts. But Somdev has made a lot of friends this past week, especially today: the home town fans love it when the outsider produces the 'right' result! He'll be more than welcome back next year.

With wins for home players in South African and Croatian events today, it remains to be seen if Santiago can win in Santiago. Could be fun!
