Florian Mayer dismisses two-time defending Zagreb champion Marin Cilic on Friday. Mayer is joined in the semifinals by Michael Berrer and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
There will be a new champion at the PBZ Zagreb Indoors.
Croatia's own Marin Cilic, the winner in both 2009 and 2010, went down 6-3, 6-4 to Florian Mayer in quarterfinal action on Friday evening. Mayer needed just one hour and 20 minutes to set up a semifinal showdown with last year's runner-up Michael Berrer.
Cilic, who has been in lackluster form ever since triumphing in Zagreb last season, got off to a slow start and never recovered. Mayer broke serve immediately for a 2-0 lead and he saved both of the break points he faced in the first set to consolidate the advantage.
The second frame of play opened with three consecutive breaks, two of which went to Mayer. The 38th-ranked German refused to give it back from there, and he took care of his serve the rest of the way. A final hold at 5-4 allowed Mayer to advance.
Cilic, the No. 1 seed, double-faulted four times and won only 40 percent of his second-serve points. Mayer wrapped up his effort with three aces and one double-fault while fighting off four of five break points.
Berrer booked a return trip to the semifinals when Richard Gasquet retired due to a shoulder injury with the German ahead 5-2 in the first set. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez is also through to the last four, having ousted qualifier Alex Bogomolov, Jr. 6-2, 7-6(6).
