Defending champion Thomaz Bellucci made the final eight at the Movistar Open, after holding on to beat Rui Machado. Sixth seed Tommy Robredo also advanced, having scored a straight-set win over Ricardo Mello Wednesday night.

Third seed Thomaz Bellucci overcame a second-set lapse to defeat round of 16 opponent Rui Machado in three sets. The World No. 31 is through to his second quarterfinal of the season, having held on to seal the victory in one hour and 54 minutes. After splitting the first two sets, Bellucci built a 3-0 lead in the final set.
The defending champion is scheduled to meet Fabio Fognini for a place in the semifinal. The seventh-seeded Italian rallied to oust Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the round of 16, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Sixth seed Tommy Robredo advanced to the quarterfinal, following his straight-set win over Brazilian Ricardo Mello late Wednesday. The Spaniard breezed through the opening set in 27 minutes, having sealed the lead with an ace. Robredo trailed 0-3 in the second, but regrouped to force a tie-break. After missing four set points at 6-2, the 28-year-old closed on a fifth at 8-7.
Robredo will meet Maximo Gonzalez in the quarterfinal. The Argentine rallied to upend Joao Souza in the round of 16, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
