Ivan Ljubicic and Richard Gasquet are through to the Zagreb quarterfinals. Ljubicic eases past Daniel Brands on Thursday while Gasquet gets a walkover against Arnaud Clement.
Ivan Ljubicic kicked off his PBZ Zagreb Indoors campaign with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Daniel Brands on Thursday evening. Ljubicic needed just one hour and eight minutes to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 2008.
Brands did not drop serve a single time in a 7-5, 6-7(3), 7-6(1) first-round win over Ivo Karlovic, but he was broken immediately in this one. The 6'5'' German double-faulted on break point at 0-1 in the first set to fall behind early and he never recovered. Ljubicic added another break at 5-2 to finish off the opening frame of play in style.
The second-seeded Croat, a three-time finalist and one-time champion in Zagreb, also cruised in the second. His third break of the day came at 3-2 and Ljubicic served it out from there, surviving a deuce game at 4-2. This week's No. 2 seed, who did not face a single break point, awaits either Illya Marchenko or Ivan Dodig in the quarters.
Richard Gasquet and Alex Bogomolov, Jr. also reached the quarterfinals on Thursday. Gasquet has not struck a single ball in the process, earning a first-round bye before getting a second-round walkover past Arnaud Clement (shoulder).
Bogomolov is enjoying one of his best weeks as a professional. The American had to qualify just to get into the main draw and he now finds himself in his first ATP quarterfinal since the summer of 2009. Bogomolov outlasted Antonio Veic in a third-set tiebreaker in round one then hammered No. 7 seed Philipp Petzschner 6-1, 6-2 in just 52 minutes on Friday.
Gasquet will face Michael Berrer for a semifinal spot while Bogomolov is going up against third-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
