    Santiago- Nalbandian survives, Monaco ousted Top seed David Nalbandian survived an opening-round test to advance to the final 16 at the Movistar Open on Tuesday. Last year’s runner-up Juan Monaco fell to fellow Argentine Maximo Gonzalez in three sets.


    (1) David Nalbandian def. Carlos Berlocq 6-2, 2-6, 6-2

    World No. 19 David Nalbandian fought his way into the second round, having held on to defeat compatriot Carlos Berlocq in three sets. After splitting the first two sets, the 29-year-old broke to lead 2-1 in the final set. Nalbandian committed a surprising 10 double faults during the match, but was able to seal a victory in an hour and 57 minutes.

    He faces fellow Argentine Horacio Zeballos in the next round. Zeballos earned a straight-set win against qualifier Ricardo Hocevar in round one, 7-6(2), 6-4.

    Maximo Gonzalez def. (2) Juan Monaco 6-4, 4-6, 6-4

    World No. 140 Maximo Gonzalez upset two-time Movistar Open finalist Juan Monaco early Tuesday. The 27-year-old recovered after dropping serve to break at 4-4 in the third set. Gonzalez completed the two-hour and 44-minute match with five of 10 break opportunities converted.

    He meets Joao Souza for a place in the quarterfinal. The Brazilian won his opener against Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay, 6-4, 7-5.
