  • Lopez sent crashing out of Johannesburg

    2/2/11 7:22 PM | Cheryl Murray
Lopez sent crashing out of Johannesburg Top seed and defending Johannesburg champion Feliciano Lopez lost heartbreaker to Frank Dancevic in the first round of the SA Tennis Open.

Seed after seed has fallen in South Africa. No. 2 seed Yen-Hsun Lu and No. 3 seed Janko Tipsarevic lost in the first round on Tuesday; Feliciano Lopez followed suit on Wednesday. The completion of the first round leaves just Kevin Anderson of the top 5 seeds.

Canada’s Frank Dancevic won this match by a scant thread in the third set tiebreaker. Lopez took the opening set in a tiebreaker, but Dancevic came storming back in the second for an easy 6-2 set. The third featured another exciting tiebreaker.

Dancevic earned himself a trio of match points that Lopez fought off with some excellent play. The defending champion had a match point of his own, but he ended it with an outrageous error. Dancevic finally took the match 10-8. Lopez and Dancevic combined for a total of 50 aces for the match.

Dancevic will take on South African wildcard Fritz Wolmarans in the second round.
