David Nalbandian makes his return to competition this week, as the ATP World Tour begins its South American clay-court swing in Santiago, Chile. The veteran headlines the 28-player field as the top seed.
Former World No. 3 David Nalbandian is slated to make his much-anticipated return to the Movistar Open, following a ten-year absence. The 29-year-old Argentine heads into the tournament with a 4-2 record, aided by a runner-up finish in Auckland (lost to Ferrer).
Nalbandian looks to regroup after a second-round exit at the Australian Open. The World No. 19 fought through to a five-set, opening-round victory over Lleyton Hewitt, but was forced to retire in the next round.
Nalbandian is located in a competitive half of the draw that hosts: (4) Juan Ignacio Chela, (5) Potito Starace and (8) Santiago Giraldo. The top seed will face fellow Argentine Carlos Berlocq in the first round. Progress through the draw could set a quarterfinal meeting with Starace, who looms as the nearest seeded player.
Topping the bottom half of the draw is second seed Juan Monaco, who commences his sixth Movistar. The 26-year-old Argentine is twice a runner-up, having made the championship match in 2008 (lost to Gonzalez) and 2010 (lost to Bellucci). Monaco has struggled in 2011, unable to win a match in back-to-back events.
Monaco has been placed in the same half as (3) Thomaz Bellucci, (6) Tommy Robredo and (7) Fabio Fognini. The closest seed to the 2010 finalist is Robredo, whom Monaco would face for a spot in the semifinal.
Monaco will open his campaign against fellow Argentine Maximo Gonzalez.
