Marin Cilic showed signs of emerging from a prolonged slump with a solid showing at the Australian Open. He hopes that is the case, as he has champion's points to defend this week in Zagreb.
The season's first Grand Slam has come and gone in Melbourne; now the stage is set for an action-packed February that begins this week at three locations around the world.
On the indoor hard courts of Zagreb, Marin Cilic will be looking for his third consecutive title. Comfortable at home in Croatia, Cilic beat Mario Ancic in the 2009 final before prevailing over Michael Berrer last season. The two-time defending champion is 12-3 at this event.
Challenging Cilic this year will be countryman Ivan Ljubicic, 6'10'' Ivo Karlovic, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, Richard Gasquet, Florian Mayer, and Radek Stepanek, among many others.
Stepanek's injury problems and general poor form left him unseeded and at the mercy of the draw. He could face Mayer in the second round before a possible meeting with Cilic in the quarterfinals. Cilic, who owns a first-round bye along with the other Top 4 seeds, will open against either Igor Kunitsyn or Jaroslav Pospisil.
A trio of Croats have found their way into a difficult final quarter of the draw. Ljubicic, the No. 2 seed, could run into Karlovic in the second round. Ivan Dodig, the only man to take a set off Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open, begins against sixth-seeded Marcel Granollers.
