Roger Federer drops a set but does not have too much trouble with Tommy Robredo on Sunday at the Australian Open. Federer is through to the quarterfinals of the season's first Grand Slam.
Roger Federer suffered a second-set hiccup but recovered to roll past Tommy Robredo 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the fourth round of the Australian Open on Sunday afternoon. Federer needed two hours and 25 minutes to reach his 27th consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal.
The world No. 2 came out firing and won almost twice as many points as his opponent in the first set (32 to 17). In fact, Federer did not drop a single service point as he went a perfect 20 for 20 in five games. One break was easily enough for him to close out the opening frame of play at 5-3.
If the Federer of the last five tournaments (of which he has won four) showed up in the first, the Federer who was on display against Gilles Simon for sets three and four of that second-round match turned up in the second. Federer sprayed a whopping 14 unforced errors while Robredo committed only one error in set two. The 52nd-ranked Spaniard broke once and never came close to losing his own serve as he leveled the match with surprising ease.
Federer, though, used it as a wakeup call and quickly restored order in the third. The Swiss became more aggressive and approached the net 16 times, the same number as he had in sets one and two combined. Federer saved the only break point he faced, so a single break allowed him to serve it out at 5-3.
From there it was all over for Robredo, who continued to wilt against a hard-charging Federer. Melbourne's defending champion continued to apply pressure in the forecourt and he added two breaks en route to finishing off the match with a clinching service hold at 5-2.
Federer struck an alarming 40 unforced errors, almost twice as many as Robredo's 21. However, the No. 2 seed connected on an impressive 50 winners--including 10 aces--to his opponent's 28. Federer awaits either Andy Roddick or Stanislas Wawrinka in the quarterfinals.

I do not think Waw has mental strength to beat Fed...Fed is his God and he is so humble when he meets him...no way Waw will beat Fed...he may make the match competitive only if Fed starts making errors and serving badly and even then he will not be able to take a set...
