Andy Roddick books a spot in the Australian Open fourth round with a four-set win over Robin Haase on Friday. Roddick is now set for a meeting with Stanislas Wawrinka, who took out Gael Monfils.
(8) Andy Roddick d. Robin Haase 2-6, 7-6(2), 6-2, 6-2
Roddick weathered a blistering start by Haase to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open on Friday afternoon. Haase came out firing and he did not face a single break point in the first set while striking 19 winners against only five unforced errors. The unseeded Dutchman continued his level of play in the second, but this time Roddick managed to hold his serve en route to a tiebreaker. That's when the tide turned, as the eighth-ranked American took the decider seven points to two.
Haase was not the same thereafter, noticeably suffering from a knee problem. Roddick donated serve once in the third, but he committed only two unforced errors (just six in total over the final two sets) to his opponent's 10 for a two-sets-to-one lead. Melbourne's No. 8 seed dropped a mere two service points in a dominant fourth set to advance after two hours and 26 minutes.
(19) Stanislas Wawrinka d. (12) Gael Monfils 7-6(4), 6-2, 6-3
Wawrinka wore down Monfils in a grueling first set before cruising into a fourth-round showdown against Roddick. The 19th-ranked Swiss needed two hours and 35 minutes--one hour and 13 minutes of that total in the opening frame of play--to advance. Wawrinka trailed by a break in the first and also fell behind by a mini-break in the tiebreaker, but he won the final five points and converted his first set point when Monfils double-faulted.
The 12th-ranked Frenchman fizzled throughout the last two sets, unable to partake in the unending rallies that were a staple of set one. Wawrinka broke serve twice in the second and served it out at 5-2 for a huge advantage. He donate his own serve once in the third, but three breaks--including the clincher at 5-3--were more than enough for the No. 19 seed to prevail. Wawrinka finished with an impressive 57 winners and 35 unforced errors while Monfils wrapped up his effort with 26 winners and 34 errors.
