Roger Federer is through to the fourth round of the Australian Open after a straight-set dismissal of Xavier Malisse on Friday. Next up for Federer is Tommy Robredo.
Roger Federer had much easier time of things in the third round.
Two days after outlasting Gilles Simon in a five-set thriller, Federer rolled over Xavier Malisse 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 on Friday afternoon at the Australian Open. The world No. 2 advanced to the round of 16 after just one hour and 45 minutes.
While Federer turned in a mostly sloppy performance, he still had more than enough against Malisse. The Swiss donated serve once in the first set having also struggled in that department over the second half of his battle with Simon. Federer, however, earned two breaks of his own before closing out the opening frame of play at 5-3.
More of the same continued in set two, which featured dismal serving and a host of unforced errors. Malisse again seized one break, but this time the 30-year-old Belgian surrendered serve a whopping three times. Federer's fifth break of the day at 5-3 gave him an impsoing two-set advantage.
Melbourne's defending champion went into cruise control for the third, although he still struggled with his first serve. Federer added two more breaks and finally charged through a set without struggling to hold. He allowed Malisse no break points as he served out the proceedings at 5-1.
"Today was tough, despite what the score says," said Federer, who set the record for most wins at the Australian Open with 57, surpassing Stefan Edberg. "It's very nice to take the record but Edberg still stays my idol."
Federer will face his fourth straight unseeded opponent on Sunday in the form of Tommy Robredo. The veteran Spaniard ousted Segiy Stakhovsky in four sets during third-round action.

Federer prevented the talented Malisse from getting in a rhythm by playing unpredictably.Serve and volleys, drop shots changes of pace and spin etc.Fed and Annacone took this guy seriously.
