Andy Roddick advances with little trouble at the Australian Open on Wednesday. Fellow American Mardy Fish, however, loses his second-round match to Tommy Robredo.
(8) Andy Roddick d. Igor Kunitsyn 7-6(7), 6-2, 6-3
Roddick blasted 17 aces and committed only 16 unforced errors as he cruised past Kunitsyn and reached the third round of the Australian Open on Wednesday. The eighth-ranked American, though, had to fight hard in the first set. Neither man could muster up even a single break point en route to a tiebreaker. Kunitsyn saved one set point on Roddick's serve but then missed a set point of his own before falling 9-7.
From there the 99th-ranked Russian was unable to provide similar resistance. Roddick saved three break points in the second set and his second break of the day at 5-2 gave him a huge advantage. One break in the third was enough for the No. 8 seed to serve out the proceedings at 5-3. Next up for Roddick is Robin Haase, a four-set winner over Juan Monaco.
Tommy Robredo d. (16) Mardy Fish 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3
Both Robredo and a thyroid issue got the best of Fish during second-round action in Melbourne on Wednesday. It surely did not help that Fish had to battle from two sets down to outlast Victor Hanescu in five on Monday.
Still, the 17th-ranked American started out in fine form against Robredo. Fish did not drop serve in a dominant first set, but it all went downhill after that. After taking the second, Robredo broke his opponent a whopping three times in the third. The Spaniard did not look back in the fourth and he used one more break to serve out the match at 5-3. Robredo cracked 31 winners to set up a clash with Sergiy Stakhovsky, who ousted Lukasz Kubot in straights.
