  • Djokovic, Nishikori and Gasquet advance at the Australian Open

    1/19/11 3:30 PM | Cheryl Murray
Djokovic, Nishikori and Gasquet advance at the Australian Open	Novak Djokovic dropped a set in Melbourne but he still moves on to the third round. Joining him are Kei Nishikori and Richard Gasquet.

    Novak Djokovic def. Ivan Dodig

Croatia’s Ivan Dodig gave Novak Djokovic all he could handle in the first two sets of their second round match. In fact, Dodig was able to snag the second set out from underneath Djokovic 10-8 in the breaker. Djokovic was uncharacteristically lackluster, but the second set loss woke him up. He absolutely dominated the third and fourth sets to move into the third round. Even with the dominant sets at the end of the match, Djokovic still had one more unforced error than winners (50 to 49). The Serb will take on countryman Viktor Troicki in the third round.

    Kei Nishikori def. Florian Mayer

Japan’s rising young star Kei Nishikori was mostly dominant in this second round match. Nishikori breezed through the first two sets, dropping serve once, but breaking Mayer 4 times. And then inexplicably, he fell apart completely in the third. In just over twenty minutes, Mayer secured the set with a bagel and went into the fourth with the match momentum firmly on his racket.

Unfortunately for the German, that triumph was short-lived. Nishikori got back to work, secured one last early break of serve in the match to secure his spot in the third round against Fernando Verdasco.

    Richard Gasquet def. Adrian Mannarino

Of these three men, Richard Gasquet had the easiest path to the third round. The No. 28 seed put in a good showing against countryman Adrian Mannarino, ranked 74 in the world. Gasquet’s serve saw him through this match; he put in 76% of his first serves in the opening set and though he only struck a pair of aces, he kept Mannarino on his toes.

Gasquet continued to cash in on his serve for the remainder of the match. He took the second set in a tiebreaker, and he secured a pair of breaks in the third to win in straight sets. Gasquet will take on Tomas Berdych in the third round.
