Jo-Wilfried Tsonga went the distance against Germany’s Philipp Petzschner, but eventually came out on top. Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis was not as lucky.
Benjamin Becker def. Ernests Gulbis 7-6(5), 6-2, 6-4
Such was the breadth of tennis in Melbourne on Tuesday, that the Gulbis-Becker match was not televised at all. In front of a relatively small crowd, Gulbis was sent packing in what has become an unfortunate habit of losing in Slams early. The Australian Open marks the 6th consecutive first round loss by Gulbis in a major.
The Latvian had an opportunity to level the third set; he had 0-40 on Becker’s serve, but squandered the chances. The straight set victory sends Becker into the second round against Alexandr Dolgopolov, the up-and-coming Ukrainian player.
Robin Soderling def. Potito Starace 6-4, 6-2, 6-2
Sweden’s Robin Soderling spent 94 minutes on court and hit 12 aces in his straight set victory over Italy’s Potito Starace. The Italian was so soundly outplayed throughout the match, that he never earned a single break point.
Starace managed to keep the first set competitive. There was a single break point chance in the set, which Soderling was able to convert. The remaining two sets were dominated completely by Soderling, who will advance to the second round, where he’ll take on Gilles Muller of Luxembourg.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga def. Philipp Petzschner 4-6, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4
Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga won his first ever victory from 2 sets to love down on Tuesday against Philipp Petzschner. The German appeared in firm control of the match after the first two sets. Tsonga was visibly struggling with his serve, a nod perhaps to the chronic back injury the Frenchman has struggled with.
As the match went on, however, Tsonga improved his placement and pressured Petzschner, who eventually self-destructed. With the crowd firmly in his corner, Tsonga ripped through the third and fourth sets. Petzschner’s first serve percentage finally sealed his fate; the German put in juswt 50% of his first serves in the fifth set, which allowed Tsonga to snag a pair of service breaks.
Tsonga will play Italian Andreas Seppi in the second round.
