One-time bad boy Lleyton Hewitt may be mellowing somewhat in his concluding tennis years, with the 29-year-old likely paving the way for his next career move.
The former No. 1 who has always been an acquired taste for many fans, has begun what amounts to a broadcast audition during the Australian Open for the Seven Network.
Not only will the Aussie be on court as he carries the flag for the nation in a record 15th consecutive edition, he will also take some time behind the mic. That is an echo of what his one-time coach Roger Rasheed, formerly a sports stadium announcer, has done in recent seasons,in addition to coaching Frenchman Gael Monfils.
With Seven priming the pump, Hewitt said: "As always I can’t wait for the Australian Open to start, adding in PR-speak: "And this year I also look forward to giving fans and viewers my thoughts into some of the players and matches when I join the Channel 7 commentary team."
Network officials believe they have scored a coup as they add Hewitt to a telecast team which also features the often-prickly American Jim Courier, another Grand Slam winner whose tennis provided a post-career meal ticket.
And in the Europort broadcast booth, former Melbourne champion Amelie Mauresmo will be holding forth in French for the first time, complementing the English commentary of Sweden's star of 20 years ago, Mats Wilander.
