Fernando Verdasco and Ivan Ljubicic successfully navigated a first round that has already seen its share of upsets and 5-set matches.
Fernando Verdasco def. Rainer Schuettler 6-1, 6-3, 6-2
No. 9 seed Fernando Verdasco from Spain easily handled German veteran and one-time Australian Open finalist Rainer Schuettler. The German served at just 55% for the match; Verdasco was able to take advantage with 6 service breaks.
Verdasco was particularly tough on serve. The Spaniard staved off the single break point chance Schuettler earned; never at a single moment was the German a real factor in the match.
The early departure of Nikolay Davydenko at the hands of Florian Mayer opens up this section of the draw. Verdasco was seeded to meet Davydenko in the third round. The Spaniard will take on Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic in the second round.
Ivan Ljubicic def. Peter Luczak 6-3, 6-3, 7-6(2)
Croatia’s Ivan Ljubicic defeated Australian wildcard Peter Luczak in 3 fairly routine sets. The Croat veteran smacked 19 aces for the match, which Luczak hit just 8.
The Aussie had his chances in the opening set to earn back the break he surrendered. Luczak had 5 break point chances to level things in that set; Ljubicic fought off each of them. Those 5 chances would be the last the Aussie would earn. Ljubicic did not face another break point for the match.
The third set was easily the most competitive. Luczak did a fine job keeping pace with Ljubicic, but he was just delaying the inevitable. The Croat only gave up 2 points in the tiebreaker for the straight-set victory.
Ljubicic will take on Benoit Paire of France in the second round.
