World No. 1 Rafael Nadal returns to action at the Australian Open, looking to record his fourth consecutive Grand Slam championship victory. The 24-year-old leads the 128-player field as the top seed in Melbourne.
Rafael Nadal will commence his effort for a tenth Grand Slam at the Australian Open, hoping to secure a near improbable fourth consecutive major title. The 24-year-old Mallorcan won three of the four Grand Slams in 2010, which included his first championship at the US Open. Should he prevail in Melbourne, Nadal would become the first man to hold all four Majors since legend Rod Laver accomplished the feat for the second time in 1969.
Nadal enters into the 2011 Australian Open with a 3-1 record, following his semifinal finish in Doha. The World No. 1 struggled with illness all week before falling to Russian Nikolay Davydenko in straight sets.
In addition to his three Grand Slams, Nadal completed the 2010 season with championship wins in Monte Carlo, Rome, Madrid and Tokyo. He reached the last match at the year-end ATP World Tour Finals, where he lost a three-set contest to Roger Federer.
Nadal headlines a competitive quarter of the draw that includes: (7) David Ferrer, (10) Mikhail Youzhny, (15) Marin Cilic, (20) John Isner, (22) Michael Llodra, (27) David Nalbandian and (31) Feliciano Lopez.
The 2009 Australian Open champion is scheduled to open his campaign against veteran Marcos Daniel of Brazil. The closest seed to Nadal is fellow Spaniard Lopez, who looms as a possible third-round opponent.
Movement through the early rounds will set a possible fourth-round meeting with American John Isner. Provided the seeds hold until the quarterfinal, Nadal will take on compatriot Ferrer, who captured the Auckland title over 27th seed Nalbandian in straight sets.
