Federer rolls into Australian Open second round Roger Federer kicks off his Australian Open campaign in flawless fashion on Monday, ousting Lukas Lacko in straight sets. Federer will face Gilles Simon in round two.

Roger Federer maintained his stellar form in the first round of the Australian Open on Monday afternoon, blasting Lukas Lacko 6-1, 6-1, 6-3. Federer needed just one hour and 24 minutes to set up a second-round meeting with Lukas Lacko.

The defending champion got off to a dominant start, losing a mere three points in four service games. Two breaks were more than enough for Federer to serve out the opening frame of play at 5-1.

Lacko, who also dealth with a bad draw last year and fell to Rafael Nadal in round two, was even more hopeless in the second set. The 97th-ranked Slovak failed to hold any of his four service games. Lacko actually managed to break Federer once, but that will go down as the underdog's lone bright spot of the day.

A more competitive third set saw Lacko take care of three service games, and just one break was the difference. Federer closed it out at 5-3 and finished the proceedings with 37 winners against only 18 unforced errors. Lacko mustered only 11 winners at the expense of 27 mistakes.

"I thought it was a good match; I don't think he played too bad himself," Federer said of his opponent. "I saw some talent in him and that's why I was really happy I chose the tactic early on to pressure him. That it worked was great and I'm obviously very happy."

Federer will be happy when and if he gets past Simon, who is playing impressive tennis at the moment. Simon won the Sydney title on Saturday and defeated Yen-Hsun Lu in four sets on Monday.

Haven't seen any of the match yet, but seems like it was a nice practice session for Fed.

Really wish I could stay up for Rafa's match but unfortunately can't with work tomorrow. Really hate the matches being on early hours..
