• Federer, Roddick on course for 23rd meeting

    1/16/11 5:09 PM | Ricky Dimon
Federer, Roddick on course for 23rd meeting Andy Roddick could not have liked what he saw when the Australian Open draw ceremony was held on Friday. He is in the same quarter as defending champion and world No. 2 Roger Federer.

Roger Federer and Andy Roddick are on a collision course for a quarterfinal showdown in what looks like a relatively benign fourth section of the draw.

Federer and Roddick have faced each other on a whopping 22 occasions, with Federer dominating the well-documented head-to-head series 20-2. They have squared off twice in the Australian Open semifinals and the second-ranked Swiss won both of them in straight sets, most recently in 2009.

Neither Federer nor Roddick should have too much trouble reaching the quarterfinals. Federer opens with Lukas Lacko and his toughest test during the early rounds might come in the form of Sydney champion Gilles Simon. Seeds Sam Querrey, Mardy Fish, and Albert Montanes appear far from imposing.

Roddick begins his Melbourne campaign against Jan Hajek. The eighth-ranked American should absolutely cruise through his first three rounds at the expense of several hard-court-challenged opponents. That's when it could get tricky, with a possible fourth-round encounter against either Stanislas Wawrinka or Gael Monfils. Wawrinka recently won the Chennai title while Monfils wrapped up 2010 playing stellar tennis but has started 2011 with more injury problems.

First-round matchups to watch in this section include Monfils vs. Thiemo De Bakker, Simon vs. Wimbledon quarterfinalist Yen-Hsun Lu, Julien Benneteau vs. Juan Monaco, and Andrey Golubev vs. rising Bulgarian star Grigor Dimitrov.

I think Roddick will lose to Haase in R3. It's a very dangerous unseeded player and his form continues to improve.

I think wawrinka has a shot to make it to the quarters.

As predicted, Lacko gets a pasting from Fed, just like what he had gotten from Rafa last year. Fed hardly broke sweat!

Yeeaah future number 1 Grigor Dimitrov won his first GS match over Golubev in straight sets! Finally he's taking the big step forward!

"Yeeaah future number 1 Grigor Dimitrov"

chlorostoma , 1/17/11 3:37 PM

I mean, Dimitrov shows enormous promise, yes, but many have and many will yet so few make it to the top 10 ever.
