David Nalbandian and David Ferrer book spots in the Auckland title match on Friday. They earn straight-set wins over Nicolas Almagro and Santiago Giraldo, respectively.
(6) David Nalbandian d. (2) Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 6-2
Nalbandian continued his blistering form at the Heineken Open with a straight-set victory over Almagro on Friday afternoon. Nalbandian, who has not dropped a set this entire week, advanced to the final after one hour and 24 minutes of play. The 27th-ranked Argentine was never broken, saving all four of the break points he faced.
Almagro at least managed to be competitive throughout set one, as the only difference was Nalbandian's conversion of his lone break chance while Almagro missed his one opportunity. The second-seeded Spaniard went away quietly in the second, donating his own serve two more times. Nalbandian withstood eight Almagro aces and won 58 percent of his second-serve return points to seize the win.
(1) David Ferrer d. Santiago Giraldo 6-3, 7-5
Ferrer, the 2007 Auckland winner, is back in the final after dismissing Giraldo in just one hour and 14 minutes. The seventh-ranked Spaniard started strong and needed only one break in order to serve out the first set at 5-3.
After facing no break points in the opener, Ferrer looked like he would cruise to victory when he broke in the first game of the second set. Giraldo, however, battled back and extended the set to 5-5. Nonetheless, the underdog Colombia cracked in the 11th game and Ferrer took care of business with the match on his racket.
