(3) Ernests Gulbis def. Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-4, 6-4
World No. 24 Ernests Gulbis is safely through to the final four, following his straight-set win against Sergiy Stakhovsky on Thursday. The Latvian went ahead early, breaking at 2-2 and 4-2. Despite missing a chance to close at 5-2, he regrouped to end the set in 45 minutes. Gulbis led 2-0 in the second after saving a break point in the game. The 22-year-old ended the match with three service breaks and five of 6 break chances saved.
“My game plan is simple: I go for my serve, I go for my shots, I make the points short,” Gulbis explained, post-match. “I'm not going to try to run (Gilles) Simon from the baseline. He's much more used to playing longer rallies than me.”
He will battle Simon for a place in the championship match. The Frenchman downed Alexandr Dolgopolov in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-3.
(4) Viktor Troicki def. (5) Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-4
Fourth seed Viktor Troicki advanced to the quarterfinal after defeating fifth seed Richard Gasquet, 6-4, 6-4 late Thursday. The 24-year-old Serbian collected 8 aces and three breaks of serve through one hour and 17 minutes of play. The Frenchman struggled on serve late in the match, having donated a key double-fault at 4-4 in the second set.
“I thought I had the match under control,” Troicki said. “He just started playing better than he did in the beginning. He was raising his game and started playing some really great shots. I realised that I had to also raise my game and try to overpower him. Luckily I did a good job, and at the end I broke him and served it out. So it was a tough one.”
He meets Florian Mayer in the semifinals. The German earned a straight-set victory over Italian Potito Starace in the quarterfinal, 6-4, 6-1.
