A There will be a new champion in Auckland, as David Nalbandian defeats John Isner in quarterfinal action on Thursday. Next up for Nalbandian is Nicolas Almagro.
David Nalbandian beat John Isner 6-4, 7-6(3) in the quarterfinals of the Heineken Open on Thursday afternoon. Nalbandian needed one hour and 24 minutes to set up a semifinal meeting with Nicolas Almagro.
A break in the fourth game of the match gave Nalbandian an early advantage and he consolidated it by saving two break points throughout the first set. The 27th-ranked Argentine fought off one more break point to force a tiebreaker in the second, and he rolled through it seven points to three.
Isner, the defending champion, fired eight aces but double-faulted three times and won barely more than half of his second-serve points. Nalbandian wrapped up his effort with four aces and two doubles.
Almagro battled through a difficult test with wild card Adrian Mannarino, prevailing 7-6(3), 6-7(1), 6-2 in two hours and four minutes. The Spaniard faced only one break point in the entire match, and although he did not save it, he still won the first set in a tiebreaker.
Mannarino, who saved two break points in the second, evened the match with an overwhelming second-set tiebreaker, but he could not sustain the level. Almagro regained control in the third and two breaks were easily enough for the No. 2 seed to clinch victory.
