David Ferrer A pair of all-seeded quarterfinal clashes are on Thursday's menu in Auckland. John Isner is going up against David Nalbandian and David Ferrer is taking on Philipp Kohlschreiber.
David Ferrer outlasted Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-3 to reach the semifinals of the Heineken Open on Thursday. Ferrer, the 2007 Auckland champion, battled through the tough encounter after two hours and 43 minutes of play.
Almost nothing separated the two competitors in all three sets. Ferrer converted one of five break-point opportunities in the opening set and saved all four of the break points he faced in order to sustain the lead. Both players capitalized on one of six chances in the second before Kohlschreiber took it in a tiebreaker.
Kohlschreiber, the 2008 champion, could not hold on and he lost the third just as he did the first. The 34th-ranked German failed on his two break chances while Ferrer seized one of four opportunities. That allowed Ferrer to serve out the proceedings at 5-3, winning it on his third match point.
Next up for the seventh-ranked Spaniard is Santiago Giraldo, who erased Thomaz Bellucci 6-2, 6-4. Giraldo struck five aces without double-faulting and dropped serve only once. The Colombian earned four breaks of his own to advance easily after one hour and 18 minutes.
