    1/12/11 8:04 PM | Kelli DeMario
Sydney - Gulbis rallies, Del Potro bows out Third seed Ernests Gulbis is safely through to the Medibank International quarterfinal, after rallying to oust Igor Andreev early Wednesday. He is joined by Florian Mayer, who dispatched Juan Martin Del Potro in straight sets.

    (3) Ernests Gulbis def. (Q) Igor Andreev 2-6, 6-4, 6-3

World No. 24 Ernests Gulbis overcame a slow start to earn his first victory over Igor Andreev on Wednesday. After splitting two sets, the Latvian broke at 4-2 in the decider before sealing the win in two hours and 20 minutes. Gulbis completed the match with 17 aces and two of 12 break chances converted.

He faces Sergiy Stakhovsky for a place in the semifinals. The Ukranian upset 7th seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the round of 16, 6-3, 6-4.

Florian Mayer def. (WC) Juan Martin Del Potro 6-2, 7-5

Florian Mayer made the quarterfinals with a straight-set win against former World No. 4 Juan Martin Del Potro. The Argentine gave away two breaks in the opening set, which included a double fault trailing 2-4. A closer second set reached 5-5 before Del Potro donated a final double fault. Mayer ended the day with 10 service games held without facing a break point.

“Of course I want to play and win a tournament,” del Potro said, post-match. “When you lose, it's hard. But now it's different. I have different sensations. I lost, but I have another tournament in three days. I'm in good shape. I have my wrist in good shape. That's good.”

The German will take on Potito Starace in the quarterfinal. The Italian held on to defeat lucky loser Lukasz Kubot in the second round, 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-3.

great when clever players like mayer beat the big hammer ones. mayer also totally outplayed söderling in stockholm last autumn in what must have been one of the biggest upsets of the year.

croc, funny you should say that, to me Delpo is just another version of Soderling, they just hit the ball as hard as they can, but they both have a good serve which helps most of the time.

Mayer also gave Delpo fits last season at the Aussie

nadline, i don't think it is fair to compare del potro to söderling. del potro can play defensive can't he, and he moves really well for a big guy.

Del Potro already knows he can beat anyone. He needs to save energy before the OZ open.

Yeah croc, is'nt it quite funny that it's possible to reach #4 on the ATP ranking without being able to play defensive and without moving well on the court?
And some even dare to say it's a hard competition on the tour! ;)

yeah bollkontroll. it is quite amazing. that's why i like söderling so much. and also for his kick-ass attitude.
