Tournament seeds Richard Gasquet and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez are through to the Medibank International round of 16, following their straight-set victories over respective opponents Matthew Ebden and Chris Guccione.

Sydney finalist Richard Gasquet made a successful start to the tournament, having downed hometown wildcard Matthew Ebden, 6-4, 6-3. The World No. 29 held ten of 10 service games to seal a victory in 71 minutes. Gasquet put together a solid day on serve with 11 aces and 33 of 41 first-service points held.
He faces Andreas Seppi for a place in the quarterfinal. The Italian crushed first-round opponent Denis Istomin, 6-1, 6-0.
(7) Guillermo Garcia-Lopez def. (Q) Chris Guccione 7-6(5), 7-5
Seventh seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez came through the first round with a straight-set victory against qualifier Chris Guccione. The Spaniard, who converted just one of 14 break chances, saved four of 4 break points through one hour and 50 minutes of play. The Australian struggled with his second serve, unable to win more than 38% of the points.
Garcia-Lopez is next to meet Sergiy Stakhovsky in the round of 16. The Ukranian took out Benjamin Becker in the first round, 7-6(3), 7-6(6).
