  • Nalbandian wins Auckland opener

    1/11/11 6:12 PM | Ricky Dimon
Nalbandian wins Auckland opener David Nalbandian beats Fabio Fognini to reach the Auckland second round on Tuesday. Xavier Malisse and Juan Monaco, however, are upset.

    (6) David Nalbandian d. Fabio Fognini 7-6(3), 6-4

Nalbandian got the job done in straight sets but needed one hour and 49 minutes to get past Fognini in the first round of the Heineken Open on Tuesday afternoon. The 27th-ranked Argentine fought off a set point on serve at 4-5 in the first and eventually took it in a tiebreaker seven points to three. Fognini, though, continued to battle and he saved 12 of the first 13 break points he faced in the match. However, at 4-5 in the second the Italian finally cracked and Nalbandian seized a victory-clinching break. Auckland's No. 6 seed will face Philipp Petzschner for a spot in the quarterfinals. Petzschner outlasted Thiemo De Bakker in a third-set tiebreaker.

    (WC) Arnaud Clement d. Xavier Malisse 4-6, 6-2, 7-5

Playing just two days after finishing runner-up in Chennai, Malisse could not bounce back in time for a tough three-set battle against Clement. The 45th-ranked Belgian got off to a fast start but faded at the end. After Clement dominated the second set, dismal serving characterized the third. A total of four service breaks were exchanged en route to 5-5 before a late break gave Clement the victory after two hours and 30 minutes of play. Next up for the 33-year-old Frenchman is compatriot Adrian Mannarino.

    (Q) Adrian Mannarino d. (5) Juan Monaco 6-4, 6-3

Mannarino qualified to get into the main draw and kept up his fine form with a straight-set win over Monaco. The world No. 80 broke three times in the first set, including at 5-4 to finish it off in style. Mannarino donated his own serve once in the second, but he held the rest of his service games with ease. Monaco, playing his first match of the season, lost more than half of both his first and second-serve points in an uninspiring performance.
