Tommy Robredo wins his opening match in Auckland over Michael Venus on Monday. Robredo is joined in the second round by Philipp Kohlschreiber, who took out Carlos Berlocq.
Tommy Robredo and Philipp Kohlschreiber recovered from tough first sets to score convincing wins on Monday at the Heineken Open. Robredo fought past Michael Venus 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-0 before Kohlschreiber overcame Carlos Berlocq 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.
At 330th in the world rankings, Venus got a wild card into the main draw and gave the home crowd reason for hope. He forced a first-set tiebreaker, exchanging one break of serve each with Robredo, and a mini-break at 7-6 gave him the early lead.
From there, however, it was all Robredo. The 51st-ranked Spaniard dropped a mere four points on serve the entire rest of the way, including just one in the third set. He allowed Venus only five total points throughout the final six games. Robredo, who fired 11 aces without double-faulting, awaits either Thomaz Bellucci or Michael Russell.
Kohlschreiber got off to an even worse start in his night match against Berlocq. The No. 8 seed and 2008 Auckland champion served at 48 percent in the first set and was broken twice, including with a double-fault on set point at 2-5.
Kohlschreiber, though, broke immediately in set two and never looked back. The world No. 34 saved all four of the break points he faced in the second before breaking again at 5-3. Two more breaks in the third allowed Kohlschreiber to serve out the proceedings at 5-1 and sail into a second-round matchup with either Marcel Granollers or Bobby Reynolds.
Although he double-faulted five times, Kohlschreiber saved six of eight break points and converted four breaks of his own for victory.
