The injury hard luck continues for one-time Top 10 player James Blake, with the veteran American forced to withdraw from next week's young-old exhibition in Adelaide which marks the run-up week to the Australian Open.
Officials at the World Tennis Challenge gave no details, but the No. 135 Blake has been hampered for more than a year by a knee problem. His last match was a first-round loss in late October in Vienna as he played only 32 matches last season (15-17).
Blake was to have partnered with John McEnroe in the special event. The 32-year-old has instead been replaced by US teenager Ryan Harrison. The challenge event pits old stagers and current players from the same nation: American, International, European and Australian.
Blake had been desperate to play, but was forced into his withdrawal. His place at the Australian Open could also be in doubt due to his fading ranking. "James is a great player and we wanted to give him every opportunity to participate in WTC as he was so keen to play this event," said tournament co-director Mark Woodforde.
Others in the January 11-13 field include Croatian Ivan Ljubicic, France's Michael Llodra and Kei Nishikori of Japan along with former greats Ivan Lendl, Henri Leconte and Pat Cash.
