Defending champion Marcos Baghdatis is set to join top seed Sam Querrey at the Medibank International in Sydney, Australia. The Cypriot will enter the 250 ATP World Tour event as the second seed.
World No. 18 Sam Querrey will make his 2011 season debut, as the ATP World Tour heads to Sydney for the Medibank International. The 23-year-old struggled in late 2010, having failed to win back-to-back matches following his fourth-round finish at the US Open.
Querrey ended the season with four titles, including his first grass-court success at Queen’s Club. He became the first player in 2010 to win titles on three different surfaces, after putting together championship-winning runs in Memphis and Belgrade.
The American headlines a competitive field this week, alongside fellow seeds Marcos Baghdatis, Ernests Gulbis, Viktor Troicki, Richard Gasquet, Feliciano Lopez, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Yen-Hsun Lu.
Querrey is placed in the same half of the 28-player draw as (3) Gulbis, (7) Garcia-Lopez and (8) Lu. After an opening-round bye, the World No. 18 will face either Alexandr Dolgopolov or qualifier Bernard Tomic. The nearest seed to Querrey is Gulbis, who looms as a probable opponent in the quarterfinal.
Defending champion Marcos Baghdatis heads back to competition after a quarterfinal loss to Andy Roddick in Brisbane. He tops a tricky half of the draw that hosts (4) Troicki, (5) Gasquet and (6) Lopez. The closest seed to the World No. 20 is (6) Lopez, who meets former World No. 4 Juan Martin Del Potro in the first round.
Like Querrey, Baghdatis has been given a first-round bye and will taken on Julien Benneteau or Potito Starace in his opening-round match.
