Stanislas Wawrinka is back in the Chennai title match after cruising past No. 1 seed Tomas Berdych on Saturday. Wawrinka, who lost last year's final to Marin Cilic, will face Xavier Malisse.
Stanislas Wawrinka crushed Tomas Berdych 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinals of the Aircel Chennai Open on Saturday night. Going up against the tournament's No. 1 seed, Wawrinka turned in a near-flawless performance to set up a showdown in the title match with Xavier Malisse.
Berdych had run through three lesser-known opponents earlier in the week, but he was facing a completely different beast in this one. Wawrinka, who started slow in his previous two matches, came out on fire and never let up. The 21st-ranked Swiss broke serve at 2-2 in the first set thanks to a Berdych double-fault and he consolidated it en route to serving out the opening frame of play at 5-4.
Wawrinka's game only got better and better as Berdych's level continued to deteriorate. Two breaks were more than enough in set two for Wawrinka, who dropped only five service points in the second while also dominating on return. He won almost half of the points even when his opponent put in a first delivery and earned eight of 10 second-serve return points over the final seven games. Wawrinka's third break of the set finished off the proceedings in style.
"I have played my best game today against Berdych," said the No. 3 seed, who fired seven aces and faced just one break point. "I was focused on my level of play, served well through the match and tried to be aggressive. Today's win was important to me."
Wawrinka lost to Marin Cilic in last year's Chennai final and he is now an even 4-4 lifetime against Berdych.
