Top seed Robin Soderling made his second Brisbane International quarterfinal following his straight-set defeat of German Michael Berrer. The 26-year-old held 11 of 11 service games to seal the victory in 96 minutes. Soderling earned a key service break at 4-3 in the opening set, then closed a competitive second-set tie-break at 8-7.
“It was tough today. Two sets, but they were both really close and I had to save some break points in the first set. The second one was really close and I was lucky to win this match in two sets. I had to fight a lot to win this one. Tie-breaks are always a little different. You have to stay very focused. He came up with some good stuff in the tie-break but I still managed to win it,” Soderling said.
He faces qualifier Matthew Ebden in the next round. The Australian upset 8th seed Denis Istomin Thursday afternoon, 6-4, 6-4.
(2) Andy Roddick def. (5) Marcos Baghdatis 6-2, 6-3
Defending champion Andy Roddick is through to the semifinal after downing 5th seed Marcos Baghdatis Thursday evening. The world No. 8 collected seven aces and four service breaks through 74 minutes of play. At 2-2 in the opener, Roddick went on to secure four consecutive games to take a one-set edge. The 28-year-old American broke at 4-3 in the second before cementing the victory, 6-2, 6-3.
“I felt good about pretty much everything tonight,” Roddick explained. “The conditions were a little heavier, which made it tougher to create and that’s probably why you saw a lot of break point opportunities; the serves weren’t jumping through. On the flip side my slice was staying down, and it was tough to create off of that. That won me a lot of baseline rallies tonight.”
The defending champion is next to battle Kevin Anderson for a place in the final. The South African rallied to oust Santiago Giraldo in the quarterfinal, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
