Seeds Tomas Berdych, Richard Gasquet, and Stansislas Wawrinka roll into the Chennai second round on Tuesday. Berdych loses a mere one game in his opener against Frederico Gil.
(1) Tomas Berdych d. Frederico Gil 6-0, 6-1
Although he just one match into his campaign, Berdych is already living up to his billing as the No. 1 seed at the Aircel Chennai Open. The sixth-ranked Czech hammered Gil in just 45 minutes on Tuesday evening, cruising into the second round after losing a mere one game. Berdych lost 14 points in the entire match, including only four on his own serve. He allowed Gil one return point in set two before serving out the proceedings in routine fashion at 5-1.
(4) Richard Gasquet d. (Q) Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-1, 6-3
Roger-Vasselin did well to qualify for the main draw, but he was no match for his fellow Frenchman on Tuesday. Gasquet, who did not face a single break point, prevailed after one hour and 13 minutes. The world No. 30 broke twice in each set and his fourth break of the day at 5-3 in the second ended the match in style. Next up for Gasquet is Bjorn Phau.
(3) Stanislas Wawrinka d. (WC) Rohan Bopanna 6-4, 6-4
Wawrinka, last year's Chennai runner-up to Marin Cilic, opened his bid for a return trip to the final with little trouble. The third-seeded Swiss did not serve well, but he saved both of the break points he faced and overcame five double-faults with eight aces. Bopanna, undone by winning fewer than half of his second-serve points, dropped serve once in each set and that made the difference. Wawrinka faces qualifier David Goffin on Thursday.
