Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Nikolay Davydenko will kick off the new tennis season with appearances at the ExxonMobil Open in Qatar.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo
France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has not played a tournament since he lost to countryman Gael Monfils in Montpellier back in October. The Frenchman spent the remaining part of the season injured. His ranking still sits at No. 13 in the world. Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo is a Spaniard ranked 77 in the world. He spends much of his season on the Challenger circuit, where he has enjoyed some recent successes, including a run to the semifinals in Cancun, Mexico, where he lost to countryman Pere Riba.
Tsonga is sure to be rusty after such a lengthy time without match play, but Ramirez Hidalgo is a clay courter and he has not made his way to the top echelon of tennis. Tsonga in straight sets.
Nikolay Davydenko vs. Fabio Fognini
Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko spent the better part of 2010 falling off the tennis map. The one-time top 5 fixture is now ranked 22 in the world and has a title in Doha to defend from last year. The Russian looked to re-find a bit of his old spark at the Paris Masters, where he defeated Tomas Berdych before going down to Michael Llodra in the quarterfinals. Fabio Fognini is an Italian clay-courter. He’s ranked 55 in the world and he has actually defeated Davydenko before – but that was on clay. Davydenko is heavily favored on hard courts and will have extra motivation with champion points to defend.
