American Wayne Odesnik might well find himself shunned around the locker room after reports that his two-year ban for possessing illegal human growth hormone was reduced as a result of "cooperation" with authorities.
Reports are already translating that statement as the more understandable "snitch," with suspicions that the 25-year-old whose career-high ranking stood 77th, might have rumbled some of his colleagues. The International Tennis Federation announced in a brief statement that Odesnik is now eligible to compete from December 29.
The tainted journeyman was fined $8,000 by an Australian court after vials of the growth hormone were discovered in his luggage in January when he arrived to play the Brisbane ATP event. He was later suspended for two years from tennis for his major infraction,
There was little if any detail in the ITF statement beyond saying the disgraced player had provided "substantial assistance in relation to the enforcement of professional rules of conduct." Odesnik's ranking now sits well below 500 and any tennis he now plays will be limited to lower-level events.
