The loss of another ATP event has thrust once powerful German tennis into a state of depression after the World Team Championships was axed from the calendar for 2011 due to lack of a title sponsor.
It's a grim picture for a nation which two decades ago led Europe in the sport thanks to regular Grand Slam title performances from Steffi Graf and Boris Becker.
In 1999, the nation was the venue for 13 tournaments: seven ATP events, five WTA tournaments plus the Grand Slam Cup in Munich. Next season, that number will stand at a paltry five, with none anywhere near the top tier of the sport. The men play on the ATP in Munich, Hamburg, Halle and Stuttgart while the women have Stuttgart.
The WTC ended after 33 years. "The end of the World Team Cup is a big loss for the tennis location Germany," said German federation boss Georg von Waldenfels.
German tennis talent is currently of the low-key variety, with Philipp Kohlschreiber the best local at 34th in the world. Tommy Haas, once a Top five player, is now playing with an American passport and has seen better days at age 32.
