Wimbledon marathon man Nicolas Mahut has been called onto the French team for the Hopman Cup mixed team event starting January 1 due to the injury absence of Gael Monfils.
Mahut lost the longest match ever played in tennis, a 70-68 fifth set against John Isner in the Wimbledon first round last summer, which took more than 11 hours over three days to complete.
The substitution of the world No.132 will ironically lead to a replay of that historic match on January 3 at the Burswood Dome when the US faces the French. Monfils, who played in the Davis Cup final, is out for a month with knee pain.
Paul McNemee, impresario of the eight-nation event, is hoping that perhaps history could somehow repeat itself at his tournament. "That Wimbledon match was an epic in every sense of the word, so it will long be remembered," said the former Wimbledon doubles champion. "I'm now looking forward to watching
these guys battle it out in Perth."
Monfils was to have made his Hopman debut, but was ordered by doctors to rest. "I was looking forward to participating in the Hopman Cup for the first time," he said in a statement. "I sincerely hope that I will have the opportunity to play there in the near future."
Other leading men in the field at the dual-sex event are Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, third and fourth on the ATP, along with Australian veteran Lleyton Hewitt.
