Robin Soderling will begin training with new coach Claudio Pistolesli next week in Monte Ccarlo after the 43-year-old Italian came on board with the world No. 5 Swede.
Reports indicated that the two-time Roland Garros finalist was unsuccessful in luring compatriot Peter Lundgren away from Stan Wawrinka, while fellow Swedes Frederick Rosengren and Thomas Hogstedt also turned down the job.
Hogstedt was signed just days ago as co-coach of Maria Sharapova along with longtime collaborator Michael Joyce.
Pistolesi recently worked with German Michael Berrer. "I'm honored to be the coach of Soderling, although as yet we have not hit a ball together on court," said Pistolesi from his holiday in Thailand.
The pair will trial the arrangement for three months. Soderling, who has had a past reputation as a prickly character, split with coach Magnus Norman last week after more than two years together, with the Swedish coach keen for less travel as he tries to get a tennis academy at home up and running.
"I know Pistolesi quite well," said Norman. "We talked a lot at Paris Bercy and then again in London at the World Tour Finals. He was very interested in Robin’s play and it seemed then he was very dedicated, which is necessary because there are going to be some very long days."

i think there is not so much to be worked on about his game: he will never learn to play defensive or play volleys (that backhand smash at setpoint down against federer was obviously just a fluke, albeit pretty) neither will he ever learn to move with much elegance. rather his coach needs to help him get the most of his temper and mind... so this pistoleti is the man to harness söderling... good luck!
