The impossible dream of one-time Wimbledon finalist Mark Philippoussis is back, with the right-hander who played his last ATP match in 2006 advising that he's seriously considering a return to the regular tour.
For the former tennis playboy, his recent title success at a senior event - he beat American Davis Cup coach Jim Courier, a four-time Grand Slam winner - was enough to convince him he still has the game to play as a pro.
"I've just fallen back in love with the sport on the Champions Series,” Philippoussis said after his October senior moment. Sources tell Melbourne's Sun-Herald that the Aussie who has declared bankrupt recently after failing to pay a Melbourne home mortgage is now keen to get back onto the ATP.
But the big comeback plans do not include a run at qualifying for next month's Australian Open, but instead hinge on Wimbledon, where Philipoussis lost the 2003 final to Roger Federer. "His mentality and approach is quite different to what it has been in the past," the newspaper quoted a source as saying. "He's matured and realises he never fulfilled his potential. He is very dedicated at the moment. He is adamant that he still has something to prove to people."
The Philippoussis career was ended as much by a lack of work ethic as it was by the results of six knee surgeries on both knees. Since the end of his regular career, luck has not been with the ladies man, who has been saddled with both romantic and financial problems.
Philippoussis is apparently also taking heart after kind words from Andy Roddick following a training session several months ago. "There's no question he could come out and win some matches," said Roddick, another Wimbledon finals victim of Federer. "It's just a matter of if he could stay healthy – and that's the big if. He's certainly capable."
And Courier, 40, only added fuel to the speculation when he said that Philippoussis "can play with anybody."
