If Novak Djokovic takes care of business against Gael Monfils on Sunday in Belgrade, Janko Tipsarevic would play the fifth rubber for Serbia. He is set for a meeting with either Michael Llodra or Gilles Simon.
Janko Tipsarevic has been in this situation before.
After Novak Djokovic beat Tomas Berdych in a fourth rubber to extend Serbia's Davis Cup semifinal tie against the Czech Republic, Tipsarevic rolled over Radek Stepanek in straight sets to clinch the victory and send his country into the final.
The host Serbs again find themselves down 2-1, this time to France. Djokovic will have to defeat Gael Monfils in the fourth singles rubber on Sunday afternoon at the Belgrade Arena in order to set the stage for Tipsarevic. If that happens, Tipsarevic will go up against either Michael Llodra or Gilles Simon.
Llodra teamed up with Arnaud Clement to make a stirring doubles comeback on Saturday. They upended Nenad Zimonjic and Viktor Troicki 3-6, 6-7(3), 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 after more than four hours. Simon lost to Djokovic 6-3, 6-1, 7-5 in Friday's second singles rubber.
Tipsarevic, like Simon, struggled on Friday. The 49th-ranked Serb fell to Monfils 6-1, 7-6(4), 6-0. He is now 25-23 for the season and is a mediocre 4-5 since the U.S. Open.
Nonetheless, Tipsarevic's performance against Stepanek in the last all-important fifth rubber is encouraging. He knows he can handle the pressure and he will either be taking on a tired (physically and emotionally) Llodra or a relatively out-of-form Simon. If it comes down to the fifth rubber, look for Tipsarevic to deliver Serbia the cup.
